The urbanization process and the significant population densification in large centers triggered an increase in society's production and consumption, increasing the generation of waste, which can impact human health and the environment. In developing countries like Brazil, diseases caused by inadequate conditions of environmental sanitation result in social problems that mainly affect regions in situations of vulnerability. This article aims at analyzing the sanitation and diseases related to environmental sanitation in Brazilian regions for the elaboration of an Environmental Sanitation Index for Brazilian capitals based on indicators related to water supply; sewage and waterborne diseases. The research method is exploratory and quantitative. The Environmental Sanitation Index was elaborated from the application of the Factorial Analysis by Principal Components, with the help of the SPSS Software. As a result it was found that the water and sewage indicators of the study contribute positively to environmental sanitation, while the mortality rate due to waterborne disease indicator is negatively related to environmental sanitation. In addition, the correlation between access to environmental sanitation and cases/deaths by Covid-19 was observed, which in turn strengthens the concept of sanitation as the main measure of prevention and spread of the virus.
