Abstract

This search was conducted in Caceres city, Mato Grosso State, excerpt from Paraguay River between the Malheiros Bay and Sadao Bay, and it goal was to identify the different types of use/occupation of the left bank of the Paraguay River and degradation, with a view to discuss and confront the types of use with the environmental legislation. The procedures used in this work were: the field work for identification of the area; the observation identifies different uses through the written and photographic records; application of fast assessment protocol is to characterize an environment, through observation, based on pre-set parameters. The search showed that the transformations observed in Paraguay River, in Cáceres, in both the urban perimeter, as in the area of urban expansion, are reflections of occupation disorderly. And this occupation has contributed to the increase in environmental problems, such as: river siltation, water’s contamination, removal of vegetation and erosion. With this research was realized the need for a population's involvement in the management of the River, pressing the competent organs for the enforcement of environmental law.
