Abstract

Urban backyards have considerable potential for biodiversity conservation. However, these spaces are poorly planned, and there is little information about the diversity of flora present in the backyards of different social clases. We have quantified and compared plant diversity of the backyards of two neighborhoods in the metropolitan region of Maringá (Paraná, Brasil), by calculating diversity indices, bivariate correlations and potential of plantations. We have detected some remarkable differences in flora when compared groups of backyards from different social classes. In addition, we have developed guidelines for planning, with the aim of increasing the presence of woody vegetation and contribute to the conservation of biodiversity, including the conservation of plant species in danger of extinction.
