Abstract

The purpose of this research was to analyze the intensity, the evolution and behavior of the process of agricultural modernization in the municipalities of the State of Rio de Janeiro, in the period from 1970 to 1995. It was used the techniques of factor analysis applied to a set of variables related to the use of modern technologies. The results enabled to conclude that the best indicators of modernization of the agriculture are associated to the municipalities of Teresópolis, Sumidouro and Engenheiro Paulo de Frontin, that end the analyzed period with the best gross ratings of technological development. This result must be associated to the predominance, in these regions, of a structure of family smallholdings, dedicated to an activity intensive in technologies, the olericulture.
