Abstract

This article is about the experience of formation and operation of the One Million Rural Cisterns (P1MC), the Brazilian semiarid region, analyzing the manifestation of social capital in the case of microregion of Juazeiro-BA. Approaching social capital as an element multifaceted the dimensions integration and linkages are prioritized examination, made from secondary data and primary data obtained from the latter realization of semi-structured interviews. The findings allow us to identify the organizational action of the Catholic Church, over the past four decades, the emergence of processes which endowed the rural communities of the notable manifestation of integration and linkages. These forms of capital vitalized the actions that lead to the establishment and operationalization of P1MC and simultaneously were strengthened and expanded, from the actions undertaken with the implementation of the program.
